I’m going to let you in on a little secret: what you wear for a session can make or break the whole session. I know that I have said it before, but I am going to keep saying it. Why? Because it is true.

But I know, you are already investing in the session itself and buying all new clothes for your newborn session seems like an extravagance. I get it, I really do. But here is the deal, what is the point in investing in beautiful photography if you don’t put the right effort into what you wear to the session. Trust me, you will regret it.

Here is the good news though, you do not have to break the bank in order to pull the looks together. Most of the pieces shown here are from Gap & Old Navy! And that gorgeous dress for mom? Rent the Runway! That’s right, rent a fabulous dress that makes you feel amazing. They even have a “bump friendly” section which also works perfectly for hiding a post baby bump.

WTW Newborn Session

Dad’s Look: Linen Shirt from Gap, Everyday Shorts from Gap | Mom’s Look: Badgley Mischka Floral Maxi | Baby Boy: KicKee Pants | Baby Girl: Ruffle Bodysuit | Big Brother: Old Navy Linen Shirt, Gap Linen Shorts | Big Sisters: Gap Denim Braided Dress | Gap Diamond Eyelet Dress

So, what is the key to knocking it out of the park when it comes to pulling your family’s look together for photo day? I always recommend starting with mom and that is especially true for a newborn session. After photographing many newborn sessions, I will say that I highly recommend dressing in something comfortable, flowing and feminine. This is a time in your life that is the epitome of womanhood and that should be embraced. I also really recommend busting out the Spanx. I know that some will balk at that suggestion but let me clarify. This has nothing to do with looking smaller and everything to do with creating smooth lines. Trust me on this one. Plus, it just feels good to have some support when your muscles are shot. When it comes to colors, think about what you feel best in and also what will look best hanging on your walls. And remember that your baby will be best complimented by soft colors and textures. The dress above is perfect. Flowing waist line, feminine colors and feel and it will drape beautifully when you are sitting, laying or standing.

Next focus on your new baby. I always like to see baby as close to natural as possible. We want to see those sweet legs and arms and all the little details. Very likely, you will be having some photos where baby is just in a diaper and wrapped in a soft swaddle, but some shots will be nice to have some clothes on the baby, especially with the whole family. This is a perfect time for a soft bodysuit/onesie that will fit snug. You want the size that barely still fits. Remember, snug so we can see your baby.

And now for the rest of the family. The idea is to coordinate not match. Here, I pulled color tones from mom’s dress into everyone else’s clothing selections. Nothing matches, but everything lives well together. Lay the items out on your bed or, if you are shopping online, spread out the windows on the screen so you can see everything together.

You may notice that I have not mentioned anything about shoes yet. Well, there is a reason for that. Unless we are outside, and often even then, I am a big fan of bare feet. Especially for kids! Nothing is cuter than little toes! And you want to feel free and comfortable and what is more comfortable than being barefoot?

Still stumped? Guess what. That is what I am hear for! I am always more than happy to help you style your family for the session. And remember, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable in what you are wearing and that you feel beautiful. When you feel good, you look good!

XOXO
