Lately I’ve been getting the same message over and over: unplug… reset… recharge…
It’s come in many forms – a tree cutter grinding our cable and internet lines along with the stump he was hired to grind. A squirrel gnawing the replacement line before the new landscaping was done and buried the line. A holiday week abroad with limited connections. A cancelled flight leading to 2 unexpected days exploring our old hometown (NYC). And, most recently, my water resistant iPhoneX taking an extended dip in the pool before I realized it had been blown in with the float it rested on leading to a fried and dead iPhone.
All in all, it has resulted in about 6 weeks of intermittent access to or use of social media…
And it’s been great. Don’t get me wrong, part of me is itching to get back connected to my news feeds – I love seeing what friends are up to, being inspired by influencers with great style, or seeing what it being offered by my favorite brands.
But these unexpected outages have moved me to sit on the sofa and flip through a magazine or read a book. They have propelled me off the lounge chair and into the pool to play with the kids. They have encouraged me to pick up the big camera with my own family instead of relying on the iPhone. They have allowed me to reflect on the moments instead of worrying about recording them instantly.
And all of that has reminded me why I am inspired to document and share, to photograph and write, to inspire and encourage in the first place. It all comes back to those 18 summers we get with our littles. It’s those moments that cannot be relived or replaced once they have passed. It’s soaking in all the little nuances of motherhood and appreciating each little one’s uniqueness in order to parent that child better. It’s believing that snuggles are more important than activity packed days. It’s enjoying the gift of reliving childhood through their eyes…
And so while I will be off to the Apple store tomorrow to replace that soaked phone, I’m also scheduling time into my own day from here to September that is specifically devoted to them. Sure, that might mean that a few less things get done each day, but what am I doing it all for anyway if not to enjoy this journey along the way?
So as we approach the midpoint of summer, I want to remind you that it isn’t too late to create memories that not only they, but you, will cherish for a lifetime… What’s on your summer 2019 bucket list?
I’d love to hear…
XOXO
[…] that given it’s crazy hugeness I wouldn’t wear it out and about but while we were in Spain I felt the urge and now I will wear it whenever as well. I love the banding detail and the little pop of pink. Sure, […]
