Recently, after commenting on some gorgeous baby girl eyes, her mama mentioned that she wished she could get a photo of how true blue her daughter’s eyes are. She said she uses filter on Instagram to try and bring the color back into them.
My immediate thought was – NO! No filters on that perfect baby girl!
But the truth is this is such a common mom complaint. I remember thinking it myself with my first born when I was learning photography. I was always awe struck by images with gorgeous clear eyes shinning.
Want to know the trick to capturing those baby blues (or browns or hazels) in their true glory?
It’s ALL about the light. I know I’ve mentioned finding the light before but this is so really what it is all about with photography.
But here is the kicker, not all light is created equal. To really highlight your little ones eyes, find a window with natural light streaming in and – here is the big trick – turn OFF all the overheads in the room. That’s right, I am telling you to find the light and telling you to turn off ambient light in the room. See those overheads are going to create shadows and color casts that hide your sweet babies perfect eyes. So get rid of them.
Now, position your little one on the floor, bed, sofa, whatever at a 45 degree angle to the window.
Here is a snap of the spot I used for the photo above…
Okay, so now your lights are off and baby is facing the towards the window at a 45 degree angle. You will want to position yourself between the baby and the window continuing that same 45 degree angle and not blocking the light. When I took the top photo I was just out of the view of the pull back shot to the right. This will bring the light into your babies eyes when you get their attention your direction. Now you will want to position that exposure box on your camera or iPhone onto your babies eyes to tell the camera that is the spot you want properly exposed…
And that’s it! Three super simple steps to freezing in time forever those sweet eyes that mesmerize you…
XOXO
Amazing photography! I thought that you had photoshopped his eyes! You are so good at what you do!!!
