The Fourth of July has always been my favorite holiday. The warmth of summer combined with expectations only of fun and fireworks makes it just perfect in my world. I have spent past 4th’s everywhere from the local parade and pool to the Colorado mountains to Yankee Stadium and, one of the best, the mall in our nation’s capital. And all were memories of a lifetime.

This past weekend was an especially fun one for the books. My crew loaded up and drove 5 hours from Houston to Brady, TX to the Reata River Ranch to spend the weekend with some people we had not seen in just way too long. The last time we got the crew from my husband’s law school days together, there were 4 kids and one of the families was missing. This time, we managed to get everyone together, including the Belgium based family. And we had 11 little ones with us plus one on the way.

The weekend was spent playing in the river, roasting s’mores and watching the kids make friends out of people they had just met. It was amazing to see the kids so naturally jump on each other’s dad’s backs, get help from other moms and just generally meld into feeling like they spent every weekend together their entire lifetime. I guess it just goes back to show you that kids see into the heart of others and know good people when they find them.

As we drove home on the 4th and watched fireworks show after fireworks show on the night drive, my husband and I discussed how simple and joyful the weekend was all because of the company involved. Some friendships need constant attention and nurturing to survive. Others are those special rarity that you can spend 5 years at a distance and still pick up right where you left off. And those are truly amazing friendships.

But crew, let’s not make it 5 years before the next reunion. See you next summer in France. 😉

XOXO
