Best Elf on the Shelf idea | Mom tips to make Christmas easier | Elf on the Shelf hack

Elfie sitting watch for Santa.

It’s time to talk about the elephant in the room… or, in this case, the Elf on the Shelf

I’ll be honest, when I first received our Elf my oldest was barely one and my first thought was “oh thanks, another thing moms are expected to do now” with all the sarcasm you can imagine. I tossed it into the decorations box and there it sat for five years… (sorry Aunt Dayna!)

Fast forward to when that oldest Monkey was in kindergarten and I picked her up to find her in sobbing tears… it seemed that Santa had sent an Elf to ALL of her friends but “didn’t love her enough to send one to us”…

Hey moms, can we pause for a moment and find a way to collectively decide which traditions were are buying into so that this doesn’t happen to any future kids?? Thanks…

Anyway, it seemed I was the lone hold out on the Elf trend and as a result my little was heartbroken…

So I did what any mom would do…

Me: “I bet we do have an Elf but he’s just been hiding… we’ve never even looked… let’s go home and see what we find!”

Monkey: (through tears) “maybe…”

So yes, we rushed home and the full family search ensued… Magically we found an Elf sitting on a high shelf in Daddy’s closet – it’s amazing what 3 minutes of misdirection and a mom with a mission can accomplish… (and thank you Aunt Dayna for the delayed rescue!)

And with one set of tears, we had jumped on the band wagon…

But here is the key to success with the Elf in my humble opinion… are you ready for maybe the best Christmas season mom hack EVER????

“Elfie” left a note of introduction the next morning. Here is the note that I created and printed out to set the tone for our Elf-escapades:

Yeah… see what I did there? No nightly moving… No messes to clean… pretty much my most genius parenting move ever. 😉

So while I applaud the moms who make pinterest fun this time of year with their amazing Elf on the Shelf antics, this families Elf will be hanging tight and just keeping his watchful eye out for good or bad behavior…

XOXO
