If you could tell your daughters one thing to be sure to look for in a man, what would it be?
When I posed this question the other day on Instagram, I heard a range of answers. I heard to find someone who would never make you doubt their love for you… I heard to look for someone who cherishes you without wavering… I heard to look at how the person responds in the hard times…
I loved every response. Every one of them made me say YES! That is what my daughter should look for in a partner…
But if I could tell mine to look for one thing first. One thing that stands out, what would it be? I think I would tell them to find someone that makes you laugh. Toss your head back and crack up laugh… Ribs ache from the workout of laughing laugh… And bring out the laughter when you have tears laugh… No one else understands why you are laughing laugh…
Life is hard. There are moments that get hard and tense. And in those moments sometimes you just need to stop and laugh. Or maybe you need to cry and then laugh later. But either way, I cannot imagine going through this life without laughter. Neither my husband nor I are overt comedians. We are not splap-stick. But we make each other laugh. We share a look and know the joke the other is about to make and laugh because we get it. No matter if no one else in the world laughs with us, we know that we will be laughing for years and years to come.
So to my littles, my girls and my boys, find someone that brings the laughter to your life. Because if you are laughing together you won’t doubt your love for each other. If you are laughing together while no one else laughs, you will know you cherish each other. And if you are laughing subtly through tears during the hard times… well, there is the magic of love…
