why moms don't brunch

As a 20something in NYC, it was all about brunch… Brunch was not a noun to describe the meal between breakfast and lunch. It was a verb. And it was a damn good one too.

Mondays at the office would start with tales of where we had brunched that weekend and hearing about new spots to add to the list to try the following weekend. Brunch was when you caught up on tales of who was dating someone new, what new hot spot had just been hit up and which designer sample sales were coming up… it was all very Sex & the City and as just about the only married 20something in the whole of NYC, I loved it something fierce…

And then the little ones came along…

Sure, when the oldest was still little, I could bring her along and it was all too adorable. In fact, one of my favorite brunches ever was while my husband was traveling and my dear friend Elise and I took Little Miss with us to my brother’s restaurant. It was a blast and 9 month old Hunter loved every moment…

But as anyone with a toddler knows, there comes a point when babies and dining out are just a combination that is too much work to be worthwhile. Add in a few siblings and someone is always at “that” age which makes the experience down right impossible without a team of adults.

It’s because of this that I have to just laugh, I mean really laugh, when inevitably each year in April, my dad sends around a group email or text to try and plan a Mother’s Day Brunch to celebrate all us moms…

Bless him, the man means well. But can I tell you how many Mother’s Day Brunches we have sat with the dads at one end of the table talking shop and my sister-in-law, my Mom & I at the other end juggling little ones and chasing them around a fine dining establishment? Let me just say that anyone who has done this as well knows that anything over ZERO is too many. 😉

I mean look, my dad rocks and the man knows I love brunch. But like most moms, all I want for Mother’s Day is a day to relax. Maybe a trip to the spa without anyone else to reset and recharge. Some time laying by the pool with a good book or magazine would do as well. Luckily my husband gets that and manages to always make sure and find a way to work something like that in… either he’s that amazing or I’ve trained him well – probably both.

Now as for the gifts, I am starting my idea list now… Here are my ideas so far…

I am loving the circular straw cross body trend & this Roberta Roller Rabbit’s Pulpo Bag totally grabbed my attention with the little bit of whimsy added

I am totally obsessed with the Ava top from Hunter Bell NYC – I can see it on the beach with white shorts or around town with denim like in this photo. Obsessed.

These off kilter hoops from Shashi would be awesome with a white tee and shorts for a quick and easy spring or summer day. No wish list of mine is complete without a little Jonathan Adler something. I’m thinking the Jacques Tray would look great in my formal living room on the cocktail table.
I’ve got a wall screaming for a new wall gallery just like the one in this photo from Everygirl.com and I gotta say it’s the top of my wish Mother’s Day wishlist to get some new prints and frame them out.

Houston Mother's Day Photo Session

If you are like me and crave new portraits on your wish list, you won’t want to miss Mommy & Me Minis on April 7th. It’s no secret that celebrating mamas cuts to the core of my heart… I believe that there is just about nothing as beautiful as the love between a mama and her little. I am looking forward to capturing the love you and your little share. Treat yourself to being present in the memories. Bonus the prints can be delivered in time for your loved ones to present to you on Mother’s Day.
